The story of La Oreja de Van Gogh began in 1996 in the beautiful city of Donostia-San Sebastián, Spain. The band, whose name is a tribute to the famous painter who cut off his own ear, originally consisted of Pablo Benegas (guitar), Xabi San Martín (keyboards), Álvaro Fuentes (bass), Haritz Garde (drums), and the original voice of the group, Amaia Montero. They started by playing in small local venues, but it was a victory at the sixth edition of a pop-rock contest in San Sebastián in 1997 that gave them their big break and the push they needed to record their first album.
